How To Survive Your Spiritual Healing Crisis
If you just received an energy treatment, or have been doing a lot of work on yourself, you may be going through an unexpected spiritual healing crisis. While healing sounds like a pleasant experience, it can be confusing and emotional.
You may experience a temporary healing crisis that happens right after an energy treatment or if you have been doing healing on your own. This treatment can include, reiki, acupuncture, seeing a healer, fasting, detoxing, going through a spiritual transition, working with a trauma healer, or doing powerful meditation work. This sort of energy work can be a catalyst for a spiritual healing crisis.
What is a Spiritual Healing Crisis?
A healing crisis is when you feel unwell after a healing either physically or emotionally. It is a temporary period of feeling worse after a healing session.
This can go as far as to feel like you are depressed, or even going backwards in regards to your healing. Rest assured you haven’t gone backwards and what you are feeling is temporary.
A spiritual healing crisis happens because all of the emotions you have pushed down inside of you that are now coming up to be released. The healing has stirred up emotions from the past which is why it may feel like you are temporarily re-living the past. This is a good thing as it means that they are being released. Emotions need to be felt to be released.
A healing crisis can bring up your deepest most profound pain. At the extreme, it may cause you to question life and why you are here. You may be looking at some very deep questions during a spiritual healing crisis such as, “why am I here? Why does earth exist? Why is anyone here? What’s the point of life?”
There are different levels of a spiritual healing crisis that you may experience, and each session will be different. After one session you may feel perfectly fine and after another one, you may feel depressed.
It is also possible to feel high emotions and be in total bliss after a healing. Your body and emotions are reacting in the best way they can to heal you.
Your healing crisis may also happen as a result of you doing a lot of inner work such as meditation, journaling, and whatever tools you use to heal. It’s not always after going to someone else for treatment. This often shows up unexpectedly after much inner work.
Why Does a Healing Crisis Happen?
Although a healing crisis feels really uncomfortable, it’s actually a really good sign that the energy treatment you just did is working and that it was powerful.
You have stuck emotions in your body that you haven’t looked at and when you go to an energy healer and get an energy treatment, these emotions come up to the surface to be felt. You weren’t ready to feel them until now so they are coming up for release. In order to release an emotion, you have to feel it.
Your healing crisis is basically you feeling your emotions from the past. You now feel safe working with a healer to release them and you and your higher self are all working to help you release them.
You may have trapped emotions stuck in you for years and are used to feeling a certain way. This way of feeling feels normal to you now as it is what you experience on a daily basis.
When you get a healing, these emotions release and you feel different because you have a different energy in you. It is very similar to a physical cleanse and how you experience physical symptoms when you detox. Everything is getting stirred up and this can cause discord within your physical and emotional body.
Your ego might also freak out a bit because it’s used to feeling a certain way, and it doesn’t know what to do with this lighter energy.
Basically, a healing crisis is a purging of your emotions. You are acknowledging your emotions and going through the process of feeling them. Once you get past this faze you will feel much lighter and much better. But being in it can feel very uncomfortable and confusing.
Signs of a Healing Crisis
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Flushed face
- A feeling of depression or apathy
- Loss of appetite
- Tiredness
- Insomnia
- Physical pain
- Abnormal bowel moments or diarrhea (your body is releasing toxins)
- Releasing of emotions (crying, anger, being easily triggered)
- Loss of motivation
- Skin breakouts (your emotions are releasing through your skin)
- Swelling in your body
- Cold and flu-like symptoms
These are all signs that your body is re-adjusting to the new energy and releasing toxins. You are healing and your body is eliminating waste.
Personally, I experience loss of appetite almost after every energy healing I get. It usually lasts a day or two.
How Long Does a Healing Crisis Last?
A healing crisis generally starts right after a treatment and can last up to 2 weeks. Often the most powerful energies will be with you immediately after and stay with you for the next 1-3 days. After that, they should gradually subside. Although there are always exceptions.
Tips to Navigate Your Spiritual Healing Crisis
1. Notify Your Practitioner
Make sure to contact your practitioner, especially if your healing crisis is quite extreme. They have experience dealing with this and likely have had other clients go through the same thing. Therefore, they will be able to help you navigate it and should have tips for you.
2. Rest
Rest is probably one of the most important things you can do. After a healing, a lot is going on in your energy field. It may not appear that way, but it is. Things are being rearranged, realigned, and released. So, be sure to get plenty of rest as your body goes through this intense physical process.
3. Be Gentle with Yourself
It’s important to be kind and gentle with yourself after a healing. You may be more sensitive and emotional, so be sure you are being kind and gentle, and non-judgmental with yourself during this process.
4. Drink Plenty of Water
Water will significantly help with any of your symptoms as you go through your healing crisis. Water helps to flush away any remaining toxins and re-energizes your cells.
Water will also help you to stay hydrated so that you don’t experience things such as headaches or muscle pain as intensely.
5. Use Epsom Salts
I like to have Epsom salt baths after my healings. The magnesium in it helps to relax your muscles and the salts release even more toxins from your body.
6. Eat Light & Nourish Your Body
You likely won’t feel like eating heavily after a healing as your body is releasing heavy energy. I’ve found that it’s helpful to eat lighter because your body is already doing so much work on an energetic level and the lighter foods won’t slow down the process like heavy foods will.
If you eat heavily, your body will have to tend to digest your food, taking away from the energetic process of releasing.
7. Don’t Drink on the Day of Your Healing
My healing practitioner told me that when you drink alcohol on the day of your healing it takes away the effects. So, while you may be dealing with a lot especially if you are going through a healing crisis and you feel drawn to drink, try your best not to drink at least on the day of your healing.
8. Take Time to Process Your Emotions
When you are going through a healing crisis, it is a highly emotional time. Take time to feel what is happening. You will likely feel some uncomfortable emotions. This is good because it means that you are releasing them.
What you feel you release. So, be sure to sit with yourself and experience what is happening to you.
9. Journal Whatever Comes Up
I highly recommend journaling what you are experiencing. This is so that you can look back at it (when you aren’t in the middle of it) and understand what is happening.
You’ll more easily be able to connect the dots and see things from a different perspective when you go back to your journal later. Journaling also helps you to release the emotions that are coming up.
10. Schedule Alone Time
Alone time is really important after a spiritual healing because it helps you to process your emotions. When you have other people around and distractions, it makes it more difficult to fully feel what is coming up.
After a healing you’ll be in your heart much more and very much less in your head. Your body will be processing and you’ll be going through an intensely emotional experience. If you want to do it with someone else, that’s perfectly ok. I’ve just found that it’s easier to fully process when you are alone or have some alone time.
Final Thoughts – Spiritual Healing Crisis
If you are going through a healing crisis, it is a really good sign that you are releasing old, stuck, toxic emotions. You are going through this healing process right now so that you can move forward with your life in a much more expanded way. Your consciousness is shifting and as you release these emotions, you will feel much different and better on the other side of it.
Nothing is going wrong. In fact, everything is going right if you are experiencing a spiritual healing crisis. It means that you’ve just released a ton from your physical and emotional body and you should feel much lighter on the other end of it.
